West Ham have responded to Andy Carroll's latest injury setback

West Ham have responded to Andy Carroll's latest injury setback and succeeded in their search for a new striker by signing Diafra Sakho from Metz for a fee thought to be in the region of £3.5m. The 24-year-old Senegalese striker has signed a four-year deal and could be involved in West Ham's opening match against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday if he receives international clearance in time. The deal with Metz had been in doubt after the French club threatened to report West Ham to Uefa for trying to change the terms of the deal and sign Sakho Tottenham Fodboldtrøjer on a loan with a view to a permanent transfer but the matter has been resolved. Sam Allardyce was desperate to add more firepower to his squad after last month's news that Carroll, who endured an injury-hit campaign last season, had been ruled out until November with torn ankle ligaments. Although West Ham had already signed Enner Valencia for £12m, he is not ready for first-team action yet after his exploits at the World Cup for Ecuador. West Ham had a £5m bid rejected for Sunderland's Connor Wickham this week and had shown an interest in Stoke City's Peter Crouch, but Allardyce had indicated that he was seeking alternatives in Europe as it was proving too expensive to deal with other Premier League clubs. Sakho, who will link up with his Senegalese team-mates Cheikhou Kouyaté and Mohamed Diamé, scored 43 goals in the last two seasons to help Metz achieve successive promotions to Ligue 1. His 20 goals last season helped Metz to win the title and earned him the Ligue 2 player of the year award. "This is a proud day to have signed for West Ham. I really love English football and Liverpool Fodboldtrøjer I've dreamed of coming to play for one of the big English clubs," Sakho told West Ham's official site. "Today, West Ham have given me that opportunity and I didn't hesitate to grab it. "I'm looking forward to playing. It's more than a month now that I've been training for this and right now I think I'd be ready to pull on the club colours. "I've come here to continue as I was at Metz. I'm going to give it my all, going flat out on the pitch and I think the fans will appreciate that."
